Zanzibar Travel Guide 2026: Things to Know Before You Go

Zanzibar is a tropical destination off the coast of Tanzania, known for its white-sand beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, historic Stone Town, and rich cultural heritage. It can be visited as a standalone beach holiday or combined with a Tanzania safari for a longer East African adventure. If you are planning a trip to Zanzibar in 2026, this guide covers the main things to know before you go, from when to visit and where to stay to getting around and choosing what to do.

Where Is Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of mainland Tanzania. Unguja is the main island and is commonly referred to simply as Zanzibar.

The island combines beautiful beaches with a history influenced by African, Arab, Indian, and European cultures. Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar City, is one of the best places to experience this heritage.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar can be visited throughout much of the year, but weather conditions vary between seasons.

The generally drier periods are popular with travelers looking for beach holidays and outdoor activities. The island also experiences rainy periods, although rainfall does not necessarily mean that your entire trip will be wet.

Your preferred activities can also influence when you travel. If your main priority is relaxing on the beach, you may choose your dates differently from someone interested in diving, snorkeling, or combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari.

How to Get to Zanzibar

The easiest way to reach Zanzibar for many international travelers is by flying into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport.

If you are already traveling in mainland Tanzania, you can also reach Zanzibar by domestic flight or ferry from Dar es Salaam.

For travelers combining a safari with Zanzibar, domestic flights can make it easier to connect the mainland safari circuit with the island.

Best Places to Visit in Zanzibar

1. Stone Town

Stone Town is the historic center of Zanzibar City and a great place to experience the island’s culture and history.

You can explore its narrow streets, historic buildings, markets, and waterfront while learning more about Zanzibar’s diverse heritage.

2. Nungwi

Located at the northern end of the island, Nungwi is known for its beaches, hotels, restaurants, and water activities. It is a popular choice for travelers looking for a lively beach destination.

3. Kendwa

Kendwa is another popular northern beach area, known for its wide sandy beach and relaxed atmosphere. It can be a good choice for travelers who want to spend much of their holiday by the ocean.

4. Paje

Paje, on the southeast coast, is known for its beach and water activities. It is particularly popular with travelers interested in kitesurfing and a more relaxed coastal atmosphere.

5. Jambiani

Jambiani offers a quieter beach experience and provides opportunities to experience a more local side of Zanzibar. It is suitable for travelers looking for a slower pace away from some of the busier resort areas.

6. Mnemba Area

The waters around Mnemba are well known for snorkeling and diving. Boat trips from nearby coastal areas can provide opportunities to explore the marine environment and enjoy the clear Indian Ocean waters.

Things to Do in Zanzibar

There is more to Zanzibar than spending time on the beach. Depending on your interests, you can include several different experiences in your itinerary.

  • Explore the historic streets of Stone Town
  • Relax on Zanzibar’s beaches
  • Go snorkeling or diving
  • Take a spice tour
  • Visit Prison Island
  • Enjoy a boat excursion
  • Try local food and explore markets
  • Experience local culture and communities
  • Enjoy water activities along the coast

You do not need to fill every day with activities. Leaving some time to relax can be part of the experience, especially if Zanzibar is the final stop after a busy Tanzania safari.

How Many Days Do You Need in Zanzibar?

The ideal length depends on what you want to do.

A 3- to 4-day stay can work for travelers who mainly want to relax on the beach and experience a few activities.

A 5- to 7-day stay gives you more time to explore different parts of the island, combine beach time with cultural and marine activities, and travel at a more relaxed pace.

If you are combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro climb, the island can be added as the relaxing part of a longer trip.

Where to Stay in Zanzibar

The best area to stay depends on the type of holiday you want.

Stone Town is ideal for travelers interested in history, culture, architecture, restaurants, and markets.

Nungwi and Kendwa are popular choices for travelers who want beautiful beaches, resorts, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere.

Paje and Jambiani are better suited to travelers looking for a more relaxed coastal experience and activities such as kitesurfing.

When choosing accommodation, consider the location as well as the property itself. The distance from the airport, nearby activities, beach conditions, and the type of atmosphere you prefer can all affect your experience.

Zanzibar Travel Tips for 2026

A few practical tips can make your trip easier.

  • Check the latest entry, visa, and travel requirements before departure.
  • Carry some Tanzanian shillings for smaller purchases, while cards are accepted at many hotels and larger businesses.
  • Respect local customs, particularly when visiting villages, markets, and other areas away from the beach.
  • Bring suitable clothing for both the beach and cultural visits.
  • Use reputable operators when booking boat trips, diving, snorkeling, or other activities.
  • Allow enough travel time when moving between different parts of the island.
  • Protect yourself from the strong tropical sun by using sunscreen, wearing suitable clothing, and staying hydrated.
  • If you are combining Zanzibar with a safari, plan your flights and transfers carefully to avoid unnecessary travel time.

Zanzibar With a Tanzania Safari

One of the most popular ways to visit Zanzibar is to combine it with a Tanzania safari.

You can spend several days exploring destinations such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire before flying to Zanzibar for a few days of relaxation.

This combination gives you two very different experiences in one trip: wildlife and landscapes on the mainland, followed by beaches and the Indian Ocean.

The length of each part can be adjusted according to your travel dates, budget, and interests.

Plan Your Zanzibar Holiday

Zanzibar offers a combination of beaches, culture, history, marine activities, and relaxation. Whether you want a short beach break or a longer holiday combined with a Tanzania safari, the island can be planned around your interests.

Amazing Kilimanjaro climb with this team My wife and I went on the Kilimanjaro climb, through the Machame route, and the Benson Safaris team, including the guides and the rest of the crew, were amazing people. We have traveled a lot and have been to many countries, but this team were the best. We felt very welcomed and supported throughout the multi-day hike. We had a great summit experience and a great celebration from the team after that. We will definitely go on the safari adventure with them. Genuinely great people.

Once in a lifetime safari We had a great time during our safari with Benson Safaris. From the very beginning Fortune was helpful and attentive, helping us to design our itinerary and adjust it to our budget and preferences. We did a cross country safari and had two guides, Edmund in Kenya and Carlos in Tanzania. They both were kind, knowledgeable and always willing to go the extra mile to make our trip memorable. They have different personalities, naturally, but share the same sense of commitment and love for their work. I will always remember this experience and will be grateful to them for it.

four day safari across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater As a trip of a lifetime for the family, this safari had to be extra special and Benson Safaris ensured that every step of the way we were given one of the most amazing experiences we will ever have. From shaping the right trip for us, to pre-planning check lists to the most wonderfully warm and experienced staff, I cannot speak highly enough of the service we had. We deliberately chose a local operator, not only to support local businesses but to also have a more personal touch. Dolphine was always on hand to answer any queries while our guide Liberatus was so friendly and immensely experienced (he's been driving safaris for more than 15 years) - giving us confidence that we would have the best wildlife sightings timed to avoid the larger crowds. He even managed to find us two sightings of leopards, which are notoriously hard to spot! The children gave up the count of the number of different species we saw at 30 plus but the incredible images and memories of four days on the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater will stay with us forever.

Ashrique & Krishna We travelled with Benson Safaris for our Kenya and Tanzania trip, and honestly, it was one of the best travel experiences we’ve had. From the start, the whole trip was very well planned. We crossed the Kenya–Tanzania border and then came back into Kenya, and all the immigration and border formalities were surprisingly smooth. The team was always there to guide us and help whenever needed, which made a big difference. The accommodations were another highlight. We stayed at some really beautiful places, but Olerai Lodge, Friends Camp and Khumbu Khumbu Luxury Resorts deserve a special mention. Each one had its own charm, and the food throughout the trip was genuinely excellent. After spending hours out on safari, coming back to a good meal and a comfortable place to stay was something we really appreciated. Our guides, Martin and Zab, were a huge part of what made the trip special. Martin was very knowledgeable and patient, and you could tell that he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. And then there was Zab — the Mayor of Serengeti! Honestly, I’m not sure how the trip would have been without him. He talked constantly, cracked jokes, knew everyone we came across, and somehow always seemed to know where the animals were. But beyond being a great guide, he became a friend during the trip. Some of our best memories are simply from sitting in the jeep listening to Zab talk about life, the Serengeti and pretty much everything else. He has this wonderful way of looking at life — simple, positive and full of humour. By the end, it felt less like we had hired a guide and more like we were travelling around with a friend who happened to know the Serengeti incredibly well. The actual safari experience was unbelievable. The Great Migration, the river crossings, lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, hippos and all the smaller animals in between — there was something new every single day. What I really liked was that the guides didn’t just point out animals; they helped us understand what was happening around us and how the whole ecosystem fits together. We did this trip to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, so it was already going to be a special trip for us. But Benson Safaris and the team made it much more memorable than we expected. A big thank you to everyone at Benson Safaris, to Martin, and especially to Zab, the Mayor of Serengeti, for making this such an incredible experience. We would happily travel with Benson Safaris again. And if we do make it back to the Serengeti someday, I really hope the Mayor is still around to show us around.

Absolute Dream Safari! Flawless Logistics, Upgrades and the Best Guide Wow, what an absolutely mind-blowing experience with Benson’s Safari! From the very first email to our final goodbye, they were spectacular every single step of the way. Fortune was our superstar booking agent. She custom-crafted multiple incredible options for us and pulled off absolute magic by scoring us last-minute upgrades at three of our hotels! Our guide, Zablone, was a true legend. He drove us from Arusha all the way to the Northern Serengeti with so much pride and enthusiasm. He went completely above and beyond, working tirelessly to ensure we witnessed a breathtaking river crossing. It was unforgettable! We felt completely taken care of because Benson's had a dedicated representative with us at every single transition. We never had to stress about a single logistical detail. The Safari of a Lifetime - thanks to Benson We would highly recommend Benson! At first, we were a little hesitant about booking locally and paying the full amount in advance. However, from the very first moment, all our concerns disappeared. The communication was excellent, friendly, and professional. Our itinerary was completely tailored to our wishes and exceeded our expectations. Our first meeting with our guide, Zablon, immediately gave us confidence. He is incredibly experienced, knowledgeable, and passionate about wildlife and nature. Thanks to him, we enjoyed an unforgettable 9-day safari. The picnic lunches were perfectly arranged every day, and all of the accommodations were excellent. Everything was well organized and taken care of down to the smallest detail. Thanks to Benson and Zablon, we had the trip of a lifetime. If you're looking for a reliable company that creates a personalized safari experience with outstanding service, we can wholeheartedly recommend Benson.
