10-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary: Where to Go and What to See

A 10-day Tanzania safari gives you time to explore some of East Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations without rushing through every park. You can travel across the northern safari circuit, from Tarangire’s elephant herds to the vast plains of the Serengeti and the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater. The best Tanzania itinerary depends on your travel dates, budget, wildlife interests, and preferred accommodation. Below is a suggested 10-day route, along with a shorter seven-day option for travelers with less time.

10-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary

This itinerary focuses on northern Tanzania, which is a practical choice for first-time safari visitors because several major national parks can be combined into one trip.

Benson Safaris | Buffalo at the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, Africa

Days 1–2: Arrive in Arusha and Explore Tarangire National Park

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and transfer to your accommodation in Arusha. Depending on your arrival time, you may spend the first day resting before beginning your safari.

On the second day, travel to Tarangire National Park. The park is known for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and varied wildlife habitats. You may also see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and predators during your game drives.

Tarangire is particularly rewarding during the dry season, when wildlife often gathers near available water sources.

Days 3–5: Discover Serengeti National Park

Travel to Serengeti National Park for three days of wildlife viewing. The journey may include game viewing along the way, depending on your route and schedule.

The Serengeti is one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations. Its open grasslands and diverse habitats support lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, hyenas, and large herds of grazing animals.

Three days gives you more time to explore different areas of the park and enjoy morning and afternoon game drives. You can also plan your stay around the Great Wildebeest Migration, depending on the season.

The migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year. Choosing accommodation in the appropriate area can improve your chances of seeing the herds.

Day 6: Travel to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After your Serengeti experience, travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your starting point, the journey may take several hours, so allow time for transfers and wildlife viewing along the way.

The Ngorongoro landscape includes highlands, forests, grasslands, and the famous Ngorongoro Crater. You can spend the afternoon enjoying the scenery or relaxing at your lodge before the next day’s game drive.

Staying near the crater can make an early start more convenient.

Day 7: Explore Ngorongoro Crater

Spend the day exploring Ngorongoro Crater, one of Tanzania’s most distinctive wildlife destinations.

The crater floor supports a variety of animals, including zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, and lions. It is also one of the places where visitors have a chance of seeing the endangered black rhino.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the combination of varied habitats and abundant animals makes the crater an important stop on a northern Tanzania safari.

After the game drive, continue to your accommodation in the Karatu area or another suitable location.

Day 8: Visit Lake Manyara National Park or Enjoy a Relaxed Day

Lake Manyara National Park offers a different landscape from the open plains of the Serengeti. Its habitats include groundwater forest, woodland, open areas, and a shallow alkaline lake that attracts birdlife when conditions are suitable.

You may encounter elephants, giraffes, baboons, hippos, and numerous bird species. The park is also known for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are not guaranteed.

Alternatively, you can spend the day relaxing around Karatu or enjoying a cultural activity. This option works well if you prefer a slower pace rather than adding another game drive.

Days 9–10: Return to Arusha and Depart

Travel back toward Arusha on day nine. Depending on your interests and flight schedule, you can enjoy a local activity, visit a market, or spend the afternoon relaxing at your accommodation.

On day ten, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport for your departure.

If your international flight leaves early on day ten, consider staying closer to the airport on day nine. Your safari operator should plan the final transfer around your actual departure time.

Is Seven Days Enough for a Tanzania Safari?

Yes. A seven-day Tanzania safari can provide an excellent wildlife experience if you focus on a few destinations rather than trying to visit every park.

A practical seven-day itinerary could look like this:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Arusha and transfer to your accommodation.

  • Day 2: Explore Tarangire National Park.

  • Days 3–5: Travel to and explore Serengeti National Park.

  • Day 6: Visit Ngorongoro Crater.

  • Day 7: Return to Arusha and depart, subject to your flight time.

This shorter route covers three major wildlife destinations, although the time available for transfers and game drives will depend on your chosen accommodation and route.

If you want to spend more time in the Serengeti, consider reducing the number of parks rather than trying to fit everything into one week.

When Is the Best Time for a Tanzania Safari?

Tanzania offers wildlife viewing throughout the year, but seasonal conditions affect the experience.

The dry season, generally from June to October, often provides good wildlife viewing as vegetation becomes less dense and animals gather around water sources. However, the best conditions vary by park.

The green season brings greener landscapes, seasonal rainfall, and opportunities for birdwatching. It can also offer excellent wildlife experiences, although some roads may be more challenging.

If the Great Wildebeest Migration is a priority, choose your Serengeti location according to the expected movement of the herds. The migration follows a seasonal cycle, and no single area offers the same experience throughout the year.

How Much Does a 7-Day or 10-Day Tanzania Safari Cost?

The cost of a Tanzania safari varies according to accommodation, travel dates, group size, and the type of safari you choose.

The main factors include:

  • Accommodation: Budget campsites, mid-range lodges, and luxury tented camps have different prices.

  • Transport: A private safari vehicle offers flexibility, while shared options may reduce costs.

  • Park fees: Conservation and entry fees contribute to the overall price.

  • Season: Accommodation rates and availability can vary during busy travel periods.

  • Itinerary: Additional parks, domestic flights, and longer driving distances can affect the total cost.

A 10-day safari generally costs more than a seven-day trip because it includes additional accommodation, meals, transport, and activities. However, the final difference depends on the route and accommodation selected.

Ask for a clear quotation showing what is included, such as park fees, meals, transfers, accommodation, and game drives.

Amazing Kilimanjaro climb with this team My wife and I went on the Kilimanjaro climb, through the Machame route, and the Benson Safaris team, including the guides and the rest of the crew, were amazing people. We have traveled a lot and have been to many countries, but this team were the best. We felt very welcomed and supported throughout the multi-day hike. We had a great summit experience and a great celebration from the team after that. We will definitely go on the safari adventure with them. Genuinely great people.

Once in a lifetime safari We had a great time during our safari with Benson Safaris. From the very beginning Fortune was helpful and attentive, helping us to design our itinerary and adjust it to our budget and preferences. We did a cross country safari and had two guides, Edmund in Kenya and Carlos in Tanzania. They both were kind, knowledgeable and always willing to go the extra mile to make our trip memorable. They have different personalities, naturally, but share the same sense of commitment and love for their work. I will always remember this experience and will be grateful to them for it.

four day safari across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater As a trip of a lifetime for the family, this safari had to be extra special and Benson Safaris ensured that every step of the way we were given one of the most amazing experiences we will ever have. From shaping the right trip for us, to pre-planning check lists to the most wonderfully warm and experienced staff, I cannot speak highly enough of the service we had. We deliberately chose a local operator, not only to support local businesses but to also have a more personal touch. Dolphine was always on hand to answer any queries while our guide Liberatus was so friendly and immensely experienced (he's been driving safaris for more than 15 years) - giving us confidence that we would have the best wildlife sightings timed to avoid the larger crowds. He even managed to find us two sightings of leopards, which are notoriously hard to spot! The children gave up the count of the number of different species we saw at 30 plus but the incredible images and memories of four days on the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater will stay with us forever.

Ashrique & Krishna We travelled with Benson Safaris for our Kenya and Tanzania trip, and honestly, it was one of the best travel experiences we’ve had. From the start, the whole trip was very well planned. We crossed the Kenya–Tanzania border and then came back into Kenya, and all the immigration and border formalities were surprisingly smooth. The team was always there to guide us and help whenever needed, which made a big difference. The accommodations were another highlight. We stayed at some really beautiful places, but Olerai Lodge, Friends Camp and Khumbu Khumbu Luxury Resorts deserve a special mention. Each one had its own charm, and the food throughout the trip was genuinely excellent. After spending hours out on safari, coming back to a good meal and a comfortable place to stay was something we really appreciated. Our guides, Martin and Zab, were a huge part of what made the trip special. Martin was very knowledgeable and patient, and you could tell that he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. And then there was Zab — the Mayor of Serengeti! Honestly, I’m not sure how the trip would have been without him. He talked constantly, cracked jokes, knew everyone we came across, and somehow always seemed to know where the animals were. But beyond being a great guide, he became a friend during the trip. Some of our best memories are simply from sitting in the jeep listening to Zab talk about life, the Serengeti and pretty much everything else. He has this wonderful way of looking at life — simple, positive and full of humour. By the end, it felt less like we had hired a guide and more like we were travelling around with a friend who happened to know the Serengeti incredibly well. The actual safari experience was unbelievable. The Great Migration, the river crossings, lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, hippos and all the smaller animals in between — there was something new every single day. What I really liked was that the guides didn’t just point out animals; they helped us understand what was happening around us and how the whole ecosystem fits together. We did this trip to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, so it was already going to be a special trip for us. But Benson Safaris and the team made it much more memorable than we expected. A big thank you to everyone at Benson Safaris, to Martin, and especially to Zab, the Mayor of Serengeti, for making this such an incredible experience. We would happily travel with Benson Safaris again. And if we do make it back to the Serengeti someday, I really hope the Mayor is still around to show us around.

The Safari of a Lifetime - thanks to Benson We would highly recommend Benson! At first, we were a little hesitant about booking locally and paying the full amount in advance. However, from the very first moment, all our concerns disappeared. The communication was excellent, friendly, and professional. Our itinerary was completely tailored to our wishes and exceeded our expectations. Our first meeting with our guide, Zablon, immediately gave us confidence. He is incredibly experienced, knowledgeable, and passionate about wildlife and nature. Thanks to him, we enjoyed an unforgettable 9-day safari.
