Planning a safari in Tanzania during the green season? Learn about the best parks, wildlife sightings, and pros and cons of visiting from November to May.
The Green Season in Tanzania refers to the period from November to May, when the country experiences its rainy seasons — the “short rains” (Nov–Dec) and the “long rains” (March–May). While most tourists avoid this time in favor of the dry season, the green season offers unique safari experiences with lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and special wildlife moments.
Lush Landscapes & Beautiful Light
The rains transform Tanzania’s national parks into vibrant green paradises. The skies are dramatic, the grasslands are lush, and everything feels more alive. This is a dream for photographers and nature lovers.
Fewer Tourists
Because it’s the off-peak season, parks are less crowded, giving you more intimate wildlife encounters and peaceful game drives.
Lower Prices
Lodges and camps often reduce rates during the green season, making it an excellent time for budget-conscious travelers or those seeking luxury at a better value.
Incredible Birdwatching
This is the best time for birding, as migratory species arrive from Europe and Asia. Wetlands and lakes become hotspots for flamingos, storks, and countless other species.
While some parks may be difficult to access due to muddy roads, others are perfect for green season safaris:
Ngorongoro Crater
Serengeti National Park (Southern & Central)
Lake Manyara National Park
Contrary to popular belief, wildlife doesn’t disappear during the rains. In fact:
However, the tall grass and thick vegetation can make spotting wildlife a bit more challenging.
Weather and Road Conditions
Malaria Risk
Limited Access in Remote Parks
Absolutely — if you’re open to a different kind of adventure. A safari in Tanzania during the green season may come with a little rain and mud, but it also offers spectacular scenery, unique wildlife moments, and great value.
It’s an ideal time to travel if you prefer fewer crowds, lush backdrops, and don’t mind getting a little muddy in return for once-in-a-lifetime encounters.

EXCELLENT Based on 125 reviews Posted on Lisa J28 February 2026Verified Begeistertert!
