In Swahili, safari means a journey, trip, or travel. It does not specifically mean a wildlife tour.
For example, a person traveling from one town to another can describe that journey as a safari. The word can be used for different types of travel, whether the trip is for business, visiting family, or exploring another part of the country.
Its modern association with wildlife is therefore only one part of its history.
The word safari comes from the Swahili language of East Africa. Its deeper origin can be traced to the Arabic word safar, which means travel or journey.
Swahili developed through centuries of interaction between African communities and traders from across the Indian Ocean. Arabic had a significant influence on Swahili vocabulary, particularly along the East African coast.
The Arabic word safar became safari in Swahili, referring to a journey or trip.
This is the origin behind the word we use today.
The Arabic word safar has a long history and is associated with traveling or setting out on a journey.
As trade, migration, and cultural exchange connected the East African coast with Arabia and other parts of the Indian Ocean world, Arabic words became part of the Swahili language.
Safari is one example of this linguistic connection.
It is important to distinguish between the word’s deeper origin and its modern identity. The word entered English through African usage, particularly Swahili, even though its linguistic roots can be traced further back to Arabic.
For much of its history, safari simply meant a journey. Its association with African wildlife developed later.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, European explorers, hunters, and travelers used the term safari when describing journeys and expeditions in East Africa.
These journeys often involved traveling through large areas of the African wilderness with guides, porters, and supplies.
As accounts of these expeditions became more widely published, the word safari became increasingly familiar to English-speaking audiences.
Over time, the meaning became strongly connected with expeditions into the African wilderness.
The evolution of the word can be understood quite simply:
Swahili:
Safari means a journey, trip, or travel.
Historical English usage:
Safari became associated with journeys and expeditions in East Africa.
Modern usage:
Safari commonly refers to a wildlife trip, especially a guided journey to see animals in their natural habitat.
The original meaning has not disappeared. In Swahili, safari is still a normal word for travel or a journey.
The wildlife meaning became particularly strong in international English because of Africa’s reputation for wildlife and the growth of organized tourism.
Yes, safari is a Swahili word, and Swahili is an East African language spoken widely in countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
However, its deeper linguistic root is Arabic, from safar, meaning journey or travel.
So, when asking about the safari word origin, the most accurate explanation is that the modern English word came from Swahili, while the Swahili word has Arabic roots.
Tanzania provides a good example of how the original and modern meanings of safari exist together.
In everyday Swahili, safari still means a journey. At the same time, Tanzania is internationally known for wildlife safaris in destinations such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and other protected areas.
A modern Tanzania safari may involve game drives, walking experiences, cultural activities, or other forms of travel through the country’s diverse landscapes.
The word therefore has a direct connection to both everyday Swahili and the tourism industry that has made the term famous worldwide.
The word became part of international English largely because of the popularity of travel and wildlife expeditions in East Africa.
As visitors, writers, explorers, and later tourism companies used the word, safari became increasingly recognized outside East Africa.
Today, the word is understood in many countries without translation. It commonly brings to mind wildlife, national parks, African landscapes, and guided journeys.
Its meaning has therefore expanded beyond its original use while still retaining its connection to travel.
Where does the word safari come from?
The modern word safari comes from Swahili, where it means journey, trip, or travel. The Swahili word has deeper roots in the Arabic word safar, meaning journey or travel.
What does safari mean in Swahili?
In Swahili, safari means a journey, trip, or travel. It is not limited to wildlife tourism.
Is safari an Arabic or African word?
The word used today comes from Swahili, an East African language, but its deeper linguistic origin is the Arabic word safar.
When did safari become associated with wildlife?
The association developed as European travelers and explorers used the word to describe journeys and expeditions in East Africa. It later became strongly associated with organized wildlife tourism.
Why is safari associated with Africa?
East Africa became internationally known for wildlife expeditions and later for organized wildlife tourism. As these journeys became known as safaris, the word developed its modern association with African wildlife.
The history of the word safari reflects the history of travel and cultural exchange in East Africa. What began as a Swahili word for a journey eventually became an international term closely associated with wildlife experiences in Africa.
Today, Tanzania offers some of the world’s most famous safari destinations, from the Serengeti and Ngorongoro to Tarangire and beyond.

Amazing Kilimanjaro climb with this team My wife and I went on the Kilimanjaro climb, through the Machame route, and the Benson Safaris team, including the guides and the rest of the crew, were amazing people. We have traveled a lot and have been to many countries, but this team were the best. We felt very welcomed and supported throughout the multi-day hike. We had a great summit experience and a great celebration from the team after that. We will definitely go on the safari adventure with them. Genuinely great people.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Once in a lifetime safari We had a great time during our safari with Benson Safaris. From the very beginning Fortune was helpful and attentive, helping us to design our itinerary and adjust it to our budget and preferences. We did a cross country safari and had two guides, Edmund in Kenya and Carlos in Tanzania. They both were kind, knowledgeable and always willing to go the extra mile to make our trip memorable. They have different personalities, naturally, but share the same sense of commitment and love for their work. I will always remember this experience and will be grateful to them for it.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

four day safari across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater As a trip of a lifetime for the family, this safari had to be extra special and Benson Safaris ensured that every step of the way we were given one of the most amazing experiences we will ever have. From shaping the right trip for us, to pre-planning check lists to the most wonderfully warm and experienced staff, I cannot speak highly enough of the service we had. We deliberately chose a local operator, not only to support local businesses but to also have a more personal touch. Dolphine was always on hand to answer any queries while our guide Liberatus was so friendly and immensely experienced (he's been driving safaris for more than 15 years) - giving us confidence that we would have the best wildlife sightings timed to avoid the larger crowds. He even managed to find us two sightings of leopards, which are notoriously hard to spot! The children gave up the count of the number of different species we saw at 30 plus but the incredible images and memories of four days on the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater will stay with us forever.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Ashrique & Krishna We travelled with Benson Safaris for our Kenya and Tanzania trip, and honestly, it was one of the best travel experiences we’ve had. From the start, the whole trip was very well planned. We crossed the Kenya–Tanzania border and then came back into Kenya, and all the immigration and border formalities were surprisingly smooth. The team was always there to guide us and help whenever needed, which made a big difference. The accommodations were another highlight. We stayed at some really beautiful places, but Olerai Lodge, Friends Camp and Khumbu Khumbu Luxury Resorts deserve a special mention. Each one had its own charm, and the food throughout the trip was genuinely excellent. After spending hours out on safari, coming back to a good meal and a comfortable place to stay was something we really appreciated. Our guides, Martin and Zab, were a huge part of what made the trip special. Martin was very knowledgeable and patient, and you could tell that he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. And then there was Zab — the Mayor of Serengeti! Honestly, I’m not sure how the trip would have been without him. He talked constantly, cracked jokes, knew everyone we came across, and somehow always seemed to know where the animals were. But beyond being a great guide, he became a friend during the trip. Some of our best memories are simply from sitting in the jeep listening to Zab talk about life, the Serengeti and pretty much everything else. He has this wonderful way of looking at life — simple, positive and full of humour. By the end, it felt less like we had hired a guide and more like we were travelling around with a friend who happened to know the Serengeti incredibly well. The actual safari experience was unbelievable. The Great Migration, the river crossings, lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, hippos and all the smaller animals in between — there was something new every single day. What I really liked was that the guides didn’t just point out animals; they helped us understand what was happening around us and how the whole ecosystem fits together. We did this trip to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, so it was already going to be a special trip for us. But Benson Safaris and the team made it much more memorable than we expected. A big thank you to everyone at Benson Safaris, to Martin, and especially to Zab, the Mayor of Serengeti, for making this such an incredible experience. We would happily travel with Benson Safaris again. And if we do make it back to the Serengeti someday, I really hope the Mayor is still around to show us around.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()
